RE: COVID-19 Case Identification

A confirmed case of coronavirus (Covid-19) has been identified at school. We are working closely with Wayne County Health Department to identify exposures and prevent further cases. This letter is informational only; no further action is required for you at this time.  If you have not been contacted by the district nurse or your building administrator, you are not considered to be a close-contact to the positive individual.

I want to thank all staff and students for following through social distancing measures and adhering to all other guidelines, like wearing masks at all times and not being in close contact with anyone for 15 minutes or more. I want to also remind all staff and students that we need to respect everyone’s privacy at all times. Your safety and privacy are important to us. Again, we thank all of you for adhering to all guidelines.

The virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to spread mainly from person to person, through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Spread is more likely when people are less than six feet from each other for at least 15 minutes. A person who is a close contact of someone who is infected with COVID-19 may experience COVID-19 symptoms typically within two to fourteen days after a person is exposed.

The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar in children and adults. Symptoms can include: Fever (>100.4oF), cough, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, runny or stuffy nose, loss of taste or smell, abdominal pain.

There are many things that can be done to keep our schools, homes, and communities “COVID-19 free” and protect ourselves and loved ones:

  1. Children and adults should stay home when ill.
  2. Washing hands often with soap and running warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  3. If a hand washing station is not available, use hand sanitizer properly. Gels, rubs, and hand wipes must contain at least 60% alcohol. Dispose of wipes in the trash after use.
  4. Practice Good Respiratory Etiquette (cover a cough with elbow versus hand).
  5. Follow guidance for wearing a face covering and social distancing.

If you have questions, please contact Wayne County Health Department at 734-727-7078.

Following the guidance of the MI Safe Schools Roadmap, the school has been disinfected. This includes spraying classrooms, hallways, locker rooms, and common areas as needed with a sanitizer, along with other methods of disinfection.

Additional information can be found on the CDC website.

Happy World Kindness Day Mustangs!

Be Kind-Posters (FREEBIE) by Dots-n-Spots | Teachers Pay Teachers

Friday, November 13 is WORLD KINDNESS DAY. This day reminds everyone of the goodness that surrounds us, with a focus on the impact of positivity. Kindness has no language, but still reaches every human being across race, religion, politics, location, and gender. All of us could use a little kindness.  Reach out to each other with a kind gesture or word.  Make another student’s day special.  Make your parents and teachers feel special. Make Miller special!

We all need a reminder how small acts can have a large impact on someone’s day. We try to reinforce kindness EVERY DAY but we think it is pretty special that there is a whole day devoted to being kind, random acts of kindness, making kind choices and choosing kind words.

We are all dealing with a lot of change and uncertainty right now. However, one thing has remained the same: the courtesy to be kind toward one another. I am so proud to be part of this amazing community!

Be kind. Be Strong. Go Mustangs!

A Message From Our Superintendent

November 11, 2020

Greetings,

As someone who enjoys a good long run there have been a few times when I’ve reached that point where I wasn’t sure if I could push on. They call that “hitting the wall.”  It’s that point when your body feels it can’t go any further. There is a physical component that allows you to get past that point and continue, but your mind, your will, your mental determination to overcome plays a much greater part in conquering the wall.

We as a community, as a state and nation, have seemed to hit the wall in our fight against the spread of COVID 19. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of covid cases over the past several weeks and the term “COVID fatigue” has been heard more and more to describe just one of the reasons why this is happening.  After eight months of cancelled plans, uncertainty, worry, and continuous efforts to mitigate the spread, we are all just getting tired of “dealing with this.” We are all hitting our wall. But now is the time where we must dig deep and conquer the wall. We must help each other, remind each other, and continue to work together to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Last week the District took steps to help mitigate the community spread of the virus by suspending our remaining in-person learning labs. Since infection rates in the community, and in the state, continue to increase we feel the responsible action at this time is to take further steps now rather than later to help slow the spread of this virus.

The District will be reducing the number of staff in buildings and encouraging students, parents, and community members to help support these measures.

School offices will remain open, with minimal staff, during normal school hours. We highly encourage parents and community members to communicate with staff electronically to avoid entering the building. It is understood that in some cases it may be necessary to enter a school in order to address an issue or concern. In these instances please contact the school to set up an appointment.

The Administration building will be open for public access by appointment only during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please call (313) 827-3005 for Student Services, (313) 827-3002 for Human Resources, (313) 827-3100 for Payroll and Benefits, and (313) 827-3006 for all other questions.

The District has been following very stringent mitigation strategies that have proven to be effective in our schools.  We are taking these additional proactive steps to help slow the spread of COVID- 19 and to keep our staff, students and the community safe.

We have been wearing a mask, washing hands, social distancing, and for the most part avoiding large crowds.  The increase in the number of cases is driving our decision making on school operations and our concern for the safety of students and staff. Many health experts are attributing part of the increase to extended family and friend gatherings. These events tend to create a false sense of safety and therefore people become more relaxed about following the rules. This may play an even bigger role in the spread of the virus as we move into a holiday season centered around family and friends coming together. I encourage everyone to do their part and remain committed to following safe practices and protocols that we know are effective in slowing the spread of COVID-19 and helping all of us as a community to overcome the wall.

Please avoid large gatherings and Mask Up Dearborn!

Regards,

Parent Access In Schoology

Happy Monday! Wishing all my pinner friends a great week! #MondayMotivation #HereWeGoAgain #Pinspiration www.happy… | Happy monday quotes, Monday wishes, Happy week

Good Morning Miller Families,

The district has created parent accounts in Schoology for all parents that have a valid email address in MiStar.

Here is some information that I hope helps:

Parents go to a different URL than students.

Parents will go to https://app.schoology.com  Students (and teachers) will still go to https://dearbornschools.schoology.com

Once the parents login in, they should change their password. (Their user name will be the same as their Parent Connect user name with a P before the number. Thus, if their Parent Connect user name is 1234567, their Schoology user name will be p1234567)

There is a post with information for parents on the Home Learning Hub .

Parents without an email address in MiStar – If a parent does not have an email in MiStar, we need to add an email into MiStar (please note that this must not be a duplicate email address). Adding to MiStar can be completed by a school secretary or the parent can add an email through ParentConnect.

Schoology also has a Parent Guide available to support you and your questions. One of the most important topics is Parent Notifications. You can choose how and how often you are notified by Schoology.

We value your participation in your child’s education, and we encourage you to read Schoology’s Privacy Policy & Terms of Use at  https://www.schoology.com/privacy. Student progress and activity will be monitored by faculty to ensure a safe, secure, and controlled environment.

All Parent Accounts are based on the information provided in MiStar during registration. An email will be sent to all of the Parent email addresses that we have on file. The email will include a link to Schoology, a user name and a password.

Dearborn Virtual Learning Program

Greetings Miller Families,

I hope you are all doing well, staying safe and enjoying your summer! We miss you!

On Monday, August 10 the Board of Education approved a plan for all Dearborn Public School students to return to school on-line. Students from kindergarten through high school will take classes online at least until sometime around the beginning of October.  The board will reevaluate conditions later in September to see if it is possible for some or all students to begin returning to their classrooms perhaps in a blended model of in-class and on-line learning.

The District understands there are parents who want their children in a 100% virtual learning program no matter what phase the State is in or how other students in the District are attending school.  For the parents who want a 100% on-line option for the entire school year, the school district has created the Dearborn Virtual Learning Program for students K-12.  Parents selecting this option are opting their children into the program for a one-year commitment.

In order to meet staffing, transportation, and several other components of our new school environment, it is vitally important to know how many students will join the Virtual Program. Parents seeking more information and/or are interested in opting their child(ren) into this program are highly encouraged to visit our school on date and time.

School administrators and office staff will be on hand (social distancing, limited numbers, and masks will be enforced) on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 from 9:00-2:00 to meet with parents. If you have children at different grade levels and buildings, you do not need to attend meetings at multiple schools.  Opt-in forms will be available and parents can opt-in all their children at one location. Here is a link to the complete schedule of schools and meetings.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SdFISdKk-c1Lbkz7Vj5irylxEkqJOKZy2J3HJGvJ_tI/edit#heading=h.e1437s49s5yw.

If you are not comfortable meeting in a safe environment at the school or are unable to attend on one of the scheduled days, please call or email the school so we may discuss this option and begin the opt-in process for your children.

We understand there are many questions, concerns, and uncertainties as we approach the start of the school year.  Our Back to School Reopen Committee has spent many hours considering all of the health, safety, logistical, and educational concerns before making their recommendations. Our Board spent many hours reviewing those recommendations including a six hour Study Session to hear from the various sub-committees and stakeholders.  We are now ready to move forward, together, to ensure what will be an interesting, but great, start to the 2020-21 school year.

Stay safe Mustangs!

Miller Elementary Principal

Mustang Pride Decal - Mustang Mascot College School High School ...
Proud to be A Miller Mustang!

Dear Miller Families,

It is with tremendous pride and enthusiasm that I write this letter as the newly appointed principal and instructional leader of Miller Elementary.  I have served the Dearborn Public Schools since 2008.  I began my journey as an interventionist then a bilingual resource teacher at Oakman Elementary.   After eight years at Oakman, I was fortunate enough to start my administrative internship at Miller Elementary and Woodworth Middle School.

I have lived my entire life in Dearborn and I am a former graduate of Edsel Ford High School.  I earned an Education degree from the University of Michigan – Dearborn, my Masters in Education from Wayne State, and my Administrative Certification from the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals Path to Leadership Program. I have been married for eighteen years and my husband and I are the proud parents of three amazing children.

My journey with the Dearborn Schools has been a rewarding one in many ways and cultivating life-long relationships with students, staff, and families has been the most rewarding part of it all.  Along with the teachers and staff at Miller, we will continue to build strong purposeful relationships with you, your children and our community partners.

For the last three years, I have had the pleasure of serving at Miller Elementary as the assistant principal.  In those years, I have become a part of the rich culture and inspiring educational experience that Miller offers the students, families, and staff. As an established member of the Miller family, I can say with great pride that I am honored to lead this community.  At Miller, we are committed to a school experience that ensures a safe, nurturing, and academically enriching environment in which each student can attain academic and social success through the collaboration and commitment of our students, teachers, parents, and community.

A strong partnership amongst all stakeholders is a key component to the successes of each of our students.  As the principal, it is important to me that every person who comes through our doors knows that they are part of this community, and that they play an important role in the education of the students who attend Miller. This is essential to the positive and supportive environment that is necessary in our efforts to create the ideal learning platform for our students.

I am excited to continue to work with all of you this school year!  Enjoy the remaining time of the summer and I look forward to welcoming you back to the start of the 2020 – 2021 school year!

Amal Abdulla

Miller Announcements – Week of June 8, 2020

Good Evening Miller Families,

Hope all are well and hope you enjoyed the beautiful day!

As we enter the final week of the 2019 – 2020 school year Team Miller welcomes the opportunity to again thank each of you for the steadfast support and teamwork throughout the year.  As a result of your communication and teamwork Miller’s Learning Community is stronger today than it was yesterday and we thank you.  A BIG congratulations and GREAT job to Miller Elementary Students of the Month for May!

Materials distribution and collection on Thursday was a great success, it was great to see all the students and parents who participated.  Of the 654 students attending Miller we were left with 40 bags of student materials.  If students have classroom materials that need to be returned please drop them off in the boxes by the main door with a note listing students name and teacher.  Families who have not picked up materials will be contacted tomorrow and required to pick up materials between 10 – 2 P.M.  If materials are not picked up, they will be recycled and donated.

Ms. Mikho distributing materials
Our amazing staff!
Mrs. Whalen gets a nice surprise.
Ms. Taleb has gifts ready for her class.
What a sweet treat from Ms. Burgess!

I-Ready Reading Diagnostic window opens tomorrow June 8th, 2020, all Miller students are required to take the reading diagnostic for proper reading placement.  Upon logging in students will automatically begin the diagnostic and will not begin instructional lessons until the diagnostic has been complete. It is critically important students complete their own work and receive no assistance, doing so ensure they are assigned the proper reading lessons over the summer months. While taking the diagnostic students should take their time, read the question carefully and believe in themselves!

5th Grade Ceremony, Team Miller will be celebrating 5th Grade transition to middle school this Tuesday June 9th, 2020 beginning with Ms. Alsabahi’s class at 1 P.M. The ceremony is exclusive to fifth grade students and their parents. The ceremony will take place in the bus drop off near the North side of the building. Event details were previously shared and a flyer is attached. We look forward to a special celebration with Miller 5th grade students and their families.

It has been a wonderful year, albeit a year filled with uncertainty and a new normal of life for many. Thank you, Miller Community, for the patience and commitment to children during these most unprecedented of times.  Team Miller prays for and looks forward to a fantastic 2020-2021 school year.

Please review a message from Dr. Maleyko: Superintendent Maleyko’s message

Wishing you and yours a restful summer break!

Respectfully,

Team Miller

Parents can preview possible curriculum changes

Dearborn Public Schools is offering a chance for parents and community members to explore two new curriculum resources the District is recommending for next year – one for elementary English Language Arts and the other for some high school math. Both curriculums provide extensive digital resources that are available for school and home use.

Interested parents can view some of the materials online and then learn more about the resources during online meetings on Monday for the elementary program and Tuesday for the math program.

Both curriculum resources have gone through extensive evaluation by Dearborn teachers and have been recommended by the District’s curriculum committee. This is part of the District’s regular process to update and implement new curriculum.  Please note, these changes have not yet been approved by the Board of Education.

Elementary Reading and Writing

Elementary parents are invited to learn more about the Benchmark Advance English Language Arts program that the District is considering for all the kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms.

Benchmark Advance © 2021 is a standards-based, core English Language Arts program. Language arts includes reading and writing and also impacts text-based resources for science and social studies.  The Benchmark program provides lessons and practice in all areas of reading including phonological awareness, phonics and word study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Writing is also included.

Parents are invited to attend a Zoom meeting with Benchmark representatives for more information and a Q & A session on Monday, June 1 from 5 to 6 p.m.  Please email communications@dearbornschools.org for information on logging into the Zoom meeting and to get login information to view a sample of the digital curriculum material.

Miller Elementary Week of May 18, 2020

Week Of Blessings, Happy Monday Pictures, Photos, and Images for ...

Dearest Miller Families,

Team Miller sending their love and well wishes to all with hopes you are well, safe and taking care of one another. With Ramadan entering its final week, we send blessings to all celebrating Eid this coming weekend.

Critically important students remain engaged in virtual learning and completing classroom lessons DAILY.  We are relying on our parents to be the bridge between school and home by continuing to monitor and assist students with completion of learning tasks.  At minimum students should be checking and completing assignments posted on Teacher’s Google Classroom, reading every day twenty minutes via i-Ready.   Students choosing not to engage in virtual learning will be REQUIRED to attend Summer School and are at risk of repeating the grade!

Administrators will be coordinating with the PTA and Miller Staff to schedule virtual grade level parent meetings aimed at discussing end of the year questions and listen to parent concerns and recommendations, your active engagement and feedback would be appreciated, meeting schedule and guidelines forthcoming.  Distribution and collection of student materials will take place the first week of June, summer learning materials, supplies and students’ personal belongings will be distributed while classroom and library books collected.

All Miller families should have received a PEBT Food Card, attached is an informational question and answer sheet to assist and guide parents with use of this valuable resource.

Kindergarten Round Up Power Point is currently being translated and will be posted on the school website later this week. Links to District and Miller websites attached, continue providing the most up to date information, please make a point to check regularly. Gleaners Food Bank distribution is scheduled for June 2, 2020, please plan accordingly.

Meal Distribution Update

Dearborn Public Schools families are reminded that the meal distribution schedule will have a few changes starting the week of May 18 – the week before Memorial Day.

Because schools were scheduled to be closed on Friday and Monday for Memorial Day weekend, there will be no food distribution on May 22 and 25.

Meal distributions will still occur on Monday May 18 and on Wednesday May 20.  The May 20 distribution will include breakfasts and lunches for a full week, so families should be prepared to carry the larger quantity, including a half gallon of milk per student.

Through May 20 pickup times will continue to be later at four locations. Fordson High School, Woodworth Middle School, Salina Intermediate and McCollough Elementary will distribute meals from noon to 2 p.m.

Dearborn High School, Edsel Ford High School and Smith Middle School will hand out meals from 10 a.m. to noon.

The week after Memorial Day, meal distribution will go back to 10 a.m. to noon at all seven locations. Meals that week will be distributed on Wednesday, May 27 and Friday, May 29.

Dearborn Public Schools has been providing 65,000 grab-and-go meals a week for our students.

One person can pick up food for any student living in the home.  The child does not need to attend that school.  Each bag contains breakfast and lunch for the days until the next pickup.

The grab-and-go meals are provided free to families through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s School Lunch Program. Through the program, Dearborn Public Schools offered free lunch and breakfast to all kindergarten to 12th grade students before schools were closed to slow the spread of novel coronavirus.

Meal distribution schedule:

May 11, 13, 15, 18 and 20

Meals distributed from 10 a.m. to noon at Dearborn High School, Edsel Ford High School and Smith Middle School and from noon to 2 p.m. at Fordson High School, Woodworth Middle School, Salina Intermediate and McCollough Elementary.

NO DISTRIBUTIONS MAY 22 AND 25

May 27 and 29 and June 1, 3, 5, 8 and 10

Meals distributed from 10 a.m. to noon at all seven locations.

Teacher Appreciation Video

Dear Miller Families,

Thank you to those who sent pictures and videos to show your appreciation.

This video is dedicated to our teachers to show them how much we value and appreciate them. Our teachers dedication and selflessness are the reasons we have been able to continue educating our students during these difficult times. This is just a simple token of our appreciation. We hope you enjoy it!

Superintendent Virtual Visit Video

Dearborn Public Schools. COVID-19 May 1, 2020 Update. Dr. Glenn Maleyko, Dave Mustonen and Executive Director of Staff & Student Services Maysam Alie-Bazzi recognize how Dearborn employees have gone above and beyond during this crisis and discuss some of the ways that the Human Resource Department is helping them.

Teacher Appreciation Week!

This week is a VERY special week. It is a week that we show our teachers how much we value and appreciate them. While this year’s Teacher Appreciation Week is taking place during some of the most unforeseeable circumstances our district has ever faced, our teachers dedication and selflessness are the reasons we have been able to continue educating our students during these difficult times. Completely adapting to remote learning the way our teachers did proves that they are not just teachers…. they are our superheroes!!

Please help us celebrate this week and send all photos to Mrs. Abdulla at abdulla@dearbornschools.org!

Message From the Principal

Greetings Miller Families,

Hopefully all had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Team Miller THANKS all our parents working diligently to assist their child with virtual learning and their classwork. Miller Parents always go above and beyond and remain the change we seek within our community. This week Office Staff and Administrators will be following up with students who are choosing NOT to participate in online learning.  Parents will be contacted, hard copies of learning materials delivered to the home along with supplies to complete assignments.  Students not engaging virtually will be expected to complete and submit all assignments to the Miller Office no later than June 8, 2020.  Students not completing online learning are placing themselves in jeopardy of beginning next school year significantly behind in all academic areas and will be required to attend Summer School.

Updates

·         All Dearborn Public Schools Families will receive additional food assistance via funds being added directly to Bridge Cards or mailed to families directly, please review details at:

Food Distribution Time Change Begins Today!

Dearborn Schools adds seventh site for free breakfast and lunch ...

Student meal distribution times to change at four sites during Ramadan

Ramadan starts this week and Dearborn Public Schools is adjusting the student meal distribution times at four sites to better accommodate our families who are observing that tradition.

Free student food distribution will continue at all seven schools on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

However, starting Friday, April 24 the pickup time will shift later to noon to 2 p.m. at Fordson High School, Woodworth Middle School, Salina Intermediate and McCollough Elementary. The later schedule will continue through Memorial Day weekend, when Ramadan ends this year.

Food distribution will stay at 10 a.m. to noon at the three other locations- Dearborn High School, Edsel Ford High School and Smith Middle School.

Families should also note that the distribution schedule will change the weeks around Memorial Day weekend.  The week before Memorial Day, the District will distribute food on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday – May 18, 20 and 21.  Friday May 22 is scheduled to be a day off for staff and students.  The week of Memorial Day, food distribution will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday – May 26, 27, and 29 and move back to 10 a.m. to noon at all seven schools.

Dearborn Schools families can pick up meals at any location.  Their child does not need to attend that school.  The meals are for any child under 18 living in the home. Each bag contains breakfast and lunch for a student for the days until the next pickup.  Monday and Wednesday bags each have two days of food, and Friday has three days worth.

Last week, the District distributed 65,000 meals through the program.

The grab-and-go meals will continue at least through June 10, which was scheduled to be the last full day of school for the year.

Breakfast/Lunch Distribution

Dearborn Schools adds seventh site for free breakfast and lunch ...

The free breakfast/lunch distribution continues today, Monday, starting at 10:00 am to noon at Fordson, Dearborn and Edsel Ford high schools; McCollough/Unis; Salina Intermediate; Smith Middle School; and Woodworth Middle School. The program will only be handing out food three days a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Each food bag will still contain both breakfast, lunch and milk for a child under 18, but now the bag will have food for each day until the next distribution.

The Dearborn Schools student does not have to attend that school to be eligible for a meal. A designated person can pick up meals for multiple children.  The student does not need to be present.

VIRTUAL SPIRIT WEEK @ MILLER

Good Morning Miller Families,

Even though we are at home we can still show our MILLER PRIDE and stay united! We will be posting pictures and we want to see you. Send us your AWESOME PHOTOS showing your school spirit each and every day this week!

Playgrounds Closed

Dearborn Recreation Department Changes Scope of Summer Park Games ...

During the State of Michigan mandated shut down, all Dearborn Public School facilities, including playgrounds, and athletic fields, will be closed to the public. Please do not attempt to go onto the fields or access the playgrounds.  If you are found on the property you will be asked to leave.

The Governor has ordered that we all shelter in place.  This is not a recommendation or suggestion. This action is being taken to help in the effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and to mitigate the number of people becoming sick. Hospitals in southeastern Michigan are being overwhelmed and are reaching the point where they are unable to meet the needs of those arriving for care. We must all do our part to help slow the spread of this virus and remain at home!

The Governor did say that it is ok to go for a walk, run, or bike ride. However, we can not gather in groups at local parks or playgrounds.

We look forward to the day, hopefully in the not too distant future, when our facilities will once again be open to the public and we can all return to our regular routines. The District appreciates all of the support that the Dearborn community has shown and the tremendous amount of community spirit that has been demonstrated during this very difficult time.  Together we will get through this, one community, #DearbornStrong!

Message From Our District:

Greetings,

All Dearborn Public Schools will be closed for students effective immediately, March 13, 2020. This is a result of Governor Whitmer’s order to close all K-12 school buildings, public, private, and boarding, starting Monday, March 16 until Sunday, April 5.

Dearborn Public Schools spring break will take place from Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10. Students will return to school on Monday, April 13, 2020.

Students may report on Friday, March 13, 2020 at the normal start time to pick up their belongings and school supplies.

All staff should report on Friday, March 13, 2020 to assist students. Staff will only attend for the morning half of the day followed by a half day release time.

As of Thursday, 3-12-2020 there are no reported or confirmed cases of COVID 19 in the Dearborn Public Schools.

This closure of schools is part of a nationwide effort to slow the spread of the COVID 19 virus. These actions will not eliminate the COVID 19 virus, cure COVID 19, and this will not guarantee that a person will not contract the COVID virus at a later time. Again, these actions are part of a nationwide effort to slow the spread and limit the number of people who will become infected.

Thank you.

Healthy Tip For Tuesday!

Hello again! My name is  Dania Alsaidi, 5th grade student from the Ecology Club.  Here is the healthy tip of the day!

Dairy contains nutrients that help build strong muscles, bones and teeth. Milk, yogurt and cheese are the three main types of dairy and provide calcium to keep our bodies strong. It is important to include a healthy amount of dairy in your daily meals. Did you know that low-fat chocolate milk is a perfect drink to enjoy after physical activity? Think of different types of dairy you eat every day. What are some of your favorites?

Various fresh dairy products on wooden background

Tune in tomorrow for an update on our contest and another healthy tip!

Dearborn Shines Contest (Student Post)

                         Healthy Dearborn logo

Hi, my name is Dania Alsaidi from Mr.Duering 5th grade class.

I wanted to share some exciting information with you about our Dearborn Shines Project. In anticipation of the upcoming planting season we are asking for students input to determine the vegetable and herbs to purchase and plant in our garden.

To make this a memorable time we have some fun voting and contest activities. This will  provide you with essential background information so that students can cast an informed vote.  We have also given everyone a contest packet for students to work on. From these submissions, your class will be entered in a school-wide contest to claim the spot of planting your schools pollinator garden bed!

Stay tuned for updates throughout the week and some exciting healthy tips we will be sharing.

Hi, my name is Reem Saleh and I am a student in Mrs. Traicoff’s 4th grade class.

Here is Monday’s Healthy Tip:

It is important to fill HALF of your plate with fruits and vegetables every day.  Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins and provide our body with the super power to fight off illness.  For example, we know red fruits and vegetables are full lycopene which can help prevent certain types of cancer.  Our school garden will soon be full of colorful fruits and vegetables. Think of some of your favorite fruits and vegetables and different ways you might eat them.

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE!

Dear Parents,

On Tuesday, November 6, 2018, residents of Dearborn and the Fairlane district of Dearborn Heights will join together to vote on a millage renewal proposal for Henry Ford College (HFC).

Here are some important facts about HFC and the millage renewal proposal:

  • Instead of paying taxes to another community college district, and recognizing the importance of local governance and local control of taxes, Dearborn Public School district residents decided to establish their own college. Henry Ford College is Dearborn’s college, serving the residents of Dearborn and its surrounding communities for 80 years.

  • According to the City of Dearborn’s Assessor’s Office, the average taxable value of homes in Dearborn is approximately $54,000. Based on this 2018 information, a one mill renewal will cost the average homeowner $54 per year, or $4.50 per month, the same amount they are currently paying.  When the voters approved this mill in 2013, the average homeowner payment was $3.75 per month. As home values have increased, the monthly cost has increased by 75¢ per household, on average.

  • Dearborn Public School district residents receive a substantial tuition discount (in-district tuition is currently $99 per credit hour versus $172 for a non-resident). Out of Michigan’s 28 community colleges and 14 public universities, Dearborn Public School district residents who attend HFC pay the third-lowest tuition rate in the entire state of Michigan.

  • Eligible high school students can take classes at HFC through our many dual enrollment programs, which can lead to zero-cost HFC degrees. By participating in HFC’s dual enrollment programs, many students graduate from the local Dearborn high schools with their freshman and often sophomore years of college already completed, which can result in substantial savings to them in time and money to complete their studies.
  • On average, 36% of college-bound Dearborn Public Schools graduates attend HFC.
  • As recent news reports indicate, students across the nation are leaving college with record-high debt. HFC provides an affordable, quality alternative to the higher cost of four-year institutions by providing lower tuition rates, workforce program options, and a community-recognized, excellent education that can lead to any career.  HFC also offers a four-year tuition freeze guarantee, which assures that today’s tuition rates are frozen for students who graduate from HFC within four years.
  • HFC’s English Language Institute offers instruction in American English, language, and culture. This intensive program prepares students for success in college-level English courses and employment that requires written and oral proficiency in English.

Henry Ford College has a long tradition of providing a high-quality education to students at a low cost. Without the successful passing of this millage proposal, the College would experience budget shortfalls that would negatively affect staffing, facilities, student support services, and technology advancements across campus.

Please exercise your right to vote on November 6.
